BILTONG STICKS FAQs
Remember, you’re not purchasing biltong in Africa. The UK is a lot wetter with higher humidity. This isn’t great for preserving biltong on a longer scale therefore you need to ensure you keep your biltong sticks in a dry area with as low humidity as possible.
To make the most of your delicious ‘tong’, you need to take care when storing it. Although biltong is a preserved product, it is still a natural food substance that contains water. The only reason why biltong may go off is due to incorrect storage.
You will receive our biltong sticks in a vacuumed sealed bag with oxygen absorbers. This is to preserve them as best as possible during the transit to you. Once you receive our sticks, open the bag, eat them or hang the remainder on a hook or string in a cool, dry and well-ventilated place. Do NOT put the sticks in a sealed container (that isn’t breathable) or the fridge because this will just add unnecessary moisture. Always try and eat your biltong within 3 days if possible.
Mould can occur if your sticks come into contact with another surface. Once your sticks are opened, they are exposed to the elements. Mould spores lie dormant on almost ALL surfaces. Food is a perfect breeding ground for mould as it is inherently high in nutrients. Even fresh food hosts mould spores. These do not become visible until the food is a little older (which is why we say to eat your biltong within 3 days) and the mould spores have had a chance to germinate. Once they germinate, mould will start to appear. It is important for your sticks to breathe and not touch anything else.
We want you to enjoy our freshly made biltong sticks therefore it is important you follow our advice above. We do NOT offer refunds on biltong sticks as they are specifically made and cut up to order. The UK as mentioned above has different humidity and climate and so it is important these steps are followed to ensure you are able to make the most of your delicious treat and order. If any further advice is required, you are more than welcome to call us directly on 01749 595628.
